Support your respiratory system naturally!

Man did we get it good at our house this week! Started off with a Sunday drive in the car and my husband. Shortly after we took off he began sneezing over AND over AND over again.  You know what I mean? Came up so fast that he didn’t know what hit him. But then, of course, I got a turn too! I certainly couldn’t let him suffer alone.

We use essential oils in our house. We love essential oils! We usually never feel under the weather. We just don’t. Well, almost never….

Remember – I am not a Doctor and I can’t diagnose and/or prescribe. I can only share with you how we use different things to support the systems of our bodies and our organs. So, today I’m going to talk about supporting the Respiratory system. I know a lot about essential oils, but recently I realized I had much more to learn….

I began using Eucalyptus and Lavender with some Epsom salts in my bath. When I wanted a shower, I put several drops (maybe 10-12) of Eucalyptus on a washcloth, set it on the shower floor and let the water (as hot as I could stand it) run over it so I, in effect, had an at home spa steam shower experience. Well, if I’m to be honest, it wasn’t really like a Spa steam shower would’ve been, but it worked and I didn’t need to leave the house!

I diffused essential oils ALL the time. Mainly doTERRA’s Breathe Respiratory Blend and Lime. I diffused in our kitchen/living room area and in our bedroom at night. Some nights I couldn’t even smell it but I knew it was there and was working. dōTERRA’s Breathe and Lime are both good at supporting the lungs Respiratory system by helping to keep those airways open and clear.

I also took a mug of hot water and added two drops each of Oregano, Melaleuca, Peppermint and Lemon. No, I didn’t drink it. I set it on my dining room table and inhaled the fumes. It really helped to open those sinuses and airways. What a relief. After I was done with the mug, I did what I call a mini self-facial (notice my reference to another at home spa like experience) by rubbing two of my fingers (no oils) over the sides of my nose, down my cheeks and up and over my eyebrows. Amazing what a little pressure can do.

But what about the oils in the above picture? What did you do with them, you ask?  Well, I made myself (and my hubby) a roll on that helped to support that good old Repiratory system. We LOVE it and both used it on our chest and back several times a day for about a week. It is fabulous and so simple to make. I took a 30 ml roll on bottle and added 20 drops Frankincense, 25 drops Eucalyptus, 40 drops dōTERRA Breathe, 20 drops Thyme and then filled the bottle half way with fractionated coconut oil. The recipe is for a 10 ml roll on bottle, but I love these larger roll ons and so I just filled the bottle about half way. Felt SO good and really helped us be able to sleep without coughing and hacking all night long.

Today we are feeling much better! Even though I wasn’t thrilled with this experience, I have to say I’m grateful. I hope that someone out there reading this will benefit.  Remember to honor your body. Listen to it! I believe our bodies will usually tell us what we need. Get enough sleep. Drink enough water.  Eat healthy foods. Watch (or eliminate) your sugar intake. Exercise. When we pay attention and listen we will benefit. Thank your body for letting you know what it needs to thrive!

Benefits of Himalayan Salt and Salt Lamps

Have you seen one of these lamps in your local “hippie” store and wondered what they are? Maybe you’ve seen them in a store that sells gemstones or even in your local bath and bed store. You may want to consider purchasing a Himalayan salt lamp as the newest addition to your home or office. Many people, including myself, have more that one. I keep one in my office near my desk and one in our living room. The next one I purchase will be going in our bedroom. So, why would you want one? Do they really have any benefits? Let me tell you what I’ve found when I did a simple “Google” search.

Himalayan salt and Himalayan salt lamps have many benefits. First lets talk Himalayan salt that you cook with and/or use on your food. When looking at a bottle of Himalayan salt, you will notice that it has different hues of pink, white and orange. This actually indicates a high concentration of minerals.  This salt is unlike that awful table salt that most of us have used for generations. Typically white table salt has been stripped of its minerals, chemically cleaned and bleached. Yuck! Try replacing your regular table salt with Himalayan pink salt. Your body will thank you and your food will taste so much better! You will never go back to that boring white, bleached stuff. Remember it didn’t come out of the earth that white. Your body is worth the couple of extra dollars to buy something that will actually give you some health benefits. Think of the good minerals and trace elements you’ll be taking in.

On to Himalayan salt lamps…these lamps have become a mainstay in our home. As mentioned above, we currently have two of them. I love the warm glow that they radiate. It’s peaceful and I like knowing that my family is actually benefiting from something so beautiful. The lamps don’t actually work properly without a light/heat source. But you ask, why does that matter?  How can that pinkish lamp actually be giving you any health benefits? The heat combined with the Himalayan salt lamp actually attracts the ever present water vapors that are in the air around us and these vapors then adhere to the lamp. Within these water vapors are things like allergens, pollutants, dander, and pollen. Eventually the water vapors will be re-released back into the air but the contaminates will dry with the heat from the lamp and they are not released back into the air. Wow! How about that for helping to keep the air in our homes a bit cleaner? Not only are these lamps beautiful, but they are also easy to care for. Every couple of weeks simply unplug, let the lamp cool down and then dust with a damp cloth. Easy peasy!!!

If you are thinking that maybe the only real benefit to getting one of these lamps is to help clean the air in your home or office, think again. Many studies have been done on the potential benefits that are derived from Himalayan salts. Some are listed below:

  1. Helps with relaxation and achieving a good nights rest
  2. Supports ones well being
  3. Promotes a positive mood
  4. Produces beneficial negative ions
  5. Helps to reduce stress
  6. Helps with dry skin problems
  7. Improves concentration
  8. Supports the respiratory system by reducing allergens and other particles in the surrounding air

I’m sure most of us can use some help in many of these areas. Next time you are out and about, and you see one of these beautiful lamps, think about purchasing one (or two, or three!) I don’t think you’ll have any regrets, and who knows, maybe you’ll breathe a little easier and sleep a little sounder!

Balance in Life

I was on a walk today with my dog, Lucky. It’s nice the weather is warmer and I get to do this again. As I was walking I got to thinking…how much balance do I have in my life? Some time ago I realized that I hadn’t allowed myself to be balanced. Our tagline for Blogging Barefoot is BALANCE ~ WELLNESS ~ ESSENTIAL OILS. Balance is a key part of that and I was singing to the choir yet not practicing what I preached! I love what I do for my “work.” I love sharing about essential oils. I also love teaching and training people on how to grow a successful business with these wonderful products. Yet, somehow, I had let my work get ahold of me and take all my time.

I think part of it comes from the accessibility of social media and how easy it is to get caught up on our computers, tablets, cell phones or whatever. My life had become all about my work and I didn’t take time for anything else. I realized I needed some more “me” time. So then I found a new hobby ~ photography. I really enjoy taking photos and love the instant gratification I get when I take what I think is a great photo.  I can see it right before my eyes and get instant gratification. Isn’t that what our society is all about now? Hate to say it, but I think so.

I loved getting away with my camera and then that’s all I wanted to do! I wanted to play, have fun, not be behind my computer or on the phone all day. Where was the balance in that? Over time it became clear to me that there wasn’t any. I’d found something I loved to do but yet I still needed and wanted to support those I was working with. How do we make this all happen?

Enter Balance! Yes, the oil helps. I love to diffuse it. I love to put a couple of drops in the palms of my hand, rub them together and inhale. I love to rub the oil on the bottoms of my feet. Really rub it in. It works better that way! But there’s more to it than just using an essential oil.

Make a conscious decision to have balance in your life. You don’t want to become overwhelmed, stressed or unhappy. Take time for the things you love and enjoy. If you don’t take some time now, you may miss out. Your body will let you know you need some balance if you don’t listen.  I choose to take some needed time to play and have fun. Had I done this earlier, I would’ve had a lot more enjoyable days and a lot less stress. You are worth it! Now go out, have some fun and remember to have Balance! You deserve it.

Switch up your mood by diffusing essential oils!

Diffusing essential oils can be very beneficial in our homes, work spaces and other areas where we spend a good deal of time. They are known to clean our air, effect our emotions and can even boost our immune system. Depending on the mood you are looking for can help you decide what essential oil to diffuse. I work from home and sometimes I need a pick me up so I will grab a citrus oil like Grapefruit, Lemon, Tangerine or even a mixture of several oils. Some of my favorite blends to diffuse are dōTERRA’s Citrus Bliss or Motivate.

At night I choose something more calming like dōTERRA’s Serenity. My husband loves to diffuse Cedarwood and Lavender together.  He will put a couple of drops of each on the bottoms of his feet, get the diffuser going and he’s down for the count! It’s so wonderful that on those nights when it seems our minds just won’t shut off that we have a natural solution. No running to the store for us to get something to help.

Make sure that you choose quality essential oils so that you are not releasing toxins into your environment. For years people have used scented candles, aerosols and now plug-in air fresheners to make their homes smell better. The trouble with these lies in the fragrances and materials used.  To find out more about the possible hazards of using synthetic air freshners in our homes, check out this article published in 2014:  https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/could-using-air-fresheners-during-pregnancy-boost-childhood-asthma-risk/
